🇮🇳🏏 India vs England 1st Test 2025 : Thriller in Headingley
The first match of the India vs England test series started at Headingley (Leeds) on 20 June, and fans got a dose of amazing cricket. This match was played for the new trophy – Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy – in which Shubman Gill took over the Test captaincy of India for the first time, while the command of England was in the hands of Ben Stokes.
Even without experienced players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ashwin, the Indian team started the India vs England match quite confidently. But England broke a record on the last day by chasing and stole the match.

🇮🇳 India’s Wonderful batting, but the twist in the story
India performed well in both innings, especially in the second innings when they scored 471 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and captain Shubman Gill hit wonderful centuries. There was a time when it seemed that the India vs England match would go in India’s pocket.
But fielding mistakes and fall in lower order batting gave England a chance to make a comeback. Despite making total 5 centuries India could not win the match – this is the unpredictability of cricket.
💥 Bumrah showed his brilliance, but the support was very poor
Jasprit Bumrah shook the top order of England by taking 5 wickets in the first innings. But in the 4th innings when the need was the most, he could not take a wicket. Maybe the workload or the conditions of the pitch went against him.
While Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur took some crucial wickets, consistency and building pressure was missing in the bowling. Coach Gautam Gambhir later explained that managing Bumrah’s workload is part of their long-term strategy.
🇬🇧 England’s Baseball Version 2.0: Aggression With Brains
Last day England had to chase 371 – which is a tough task as per Test cricket standards. But in the India vs England match, England showed its “Bazball” style – with controlled aggression.
Ben Duckett played an explosive innings of 149 runs and shared a 188-run partnership with Zak Crawley. In mid-innings Thakur and Krishna took 2 quick wickets but Joe Root (53*) and debutant Jamie Smith (44*) kept their cool.
Most memorable moment of the match: Smith’s six over Jadeja – that ended the match!
🔄 Turning points of the match which changed the flow
There were many such moments in the first Test match of India vs England which changed the flow of the entire game. India had built a strong position, but some crucial turning points brought England back in the match. First of all, India’s poor fielding – especially 6 dropped catches – released the pressure.
After that, 2 wickets came in one over of Shardul Thakur, it seemed that India was gaining momentum. But Jamie Smith’s calm finish and the winning six hit over Jadeja changed everything. These were the moments which changed the direction of the match and gave England a historic victory.
🧠 Strategy & Captaincy Analysis
Shubman Gill’s first Test captaincy was heartening – he took the team to 350+ total. But in the crunch moments his field placements and bowling changes were slightly off the mark.
Ben Stokes took a bold decision regarding fielding first, which was perfect according to his baseball philosophy. Aggressive yet smart leadership helped England win.
Coach Gambhir’s long-term thinking – especially managing Bumrah’s workload – seems strategic for the WTC cycle, but the result in this match went against him.
📊 Impact of the series and the way forward
England is now in the lead and their confidence is high. India will urgently have to improve their fielding and bowling depth. Some possible changes can be seen in the next match – especially in the bowling combination.
